WHY DOES MY BACK ALWAYS HURT?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Low back pain is a very common problem affecting 80-90% of all of us at some point in our lifetime. Why is that you ask? There are many reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that we are 2-legged animals carrying 2/3rds of our weight above our waist. Studies have shown deterioration or arthritis occurs much sooner in us vs. our 4-legged animal counterparts. A 180 lbs man carries roughly 120 lbs above the waist. This means, every time he bends over, in order to stand upright, he needs to lift 120 lbs PLUS whatever he is lifting. Hence, the argument of, “…but I only bent over to lift a pencil and my back went out,” seems on the surface as impossible but in reality, the man in our example is lifting the pencil plus 120 lbs. Now, let’s add to that the point that a 5 pound weight equals 50 pounds when held out in front with the arms stretched out straight. Now, if that’s not bad enough, now, let’s assume all of this is happening from a bent forward position, with a twist at the waist, with out stretched arms, while lifting a 20 pound object. Get the idea? It’s amazing our back doesn’t get injured every day as we lift 2 bags of groceries into the far end of a car trunk, or, when lifting our 30 pound child in and out of a car seat, height chair, or when they are screaming and pushing away from us as we try to lift them!

In order to further appreciate why the low back is so vulnerable to injury, some basic understanding of anatomy is needed. When we’re born, the back is made up of 33 segments of which 5 fuse by the time we’re about 18 years old to make up the sacrum (bottom of the spine) and 4 fuse to make up the coccyx (tail bone), leaving 5 lumbar (low back), 12 thoracic (mid-back) and 7 cervical (neck) vertebra. These are stacked up on top of each other like building blocks and are connected to each other by a shock absorbing disk in the front and two smaller facet joints in the back, acting like a tripod. In the low back, we’re supposed to bear about 80% of our weight in the front and 20% in the back but, if our abdominal muscles are a bit out of shape and the pelvis rotates forwards, the curve in the low back increases and overloads the back of the vertebra (facets) making them vulnerable to injury. The disk becomes injured when we bend/lift/twist. This can tear the outer tough fibers of the disk, allowing the central more liquid-like material to leak out. If this happens, the leaking or “herniated” disk can put pressure on the nerve that exits the spine and travels down our leg. If the pain pattern includes the back of the leg, it’s commonly referred to as “sciatica.”

OK, enough about anatomy. What can we do to reduce the chances of having periodic low back pain? Obviously, staying in shape is very important. Certain muscles of the body must be tight to keep us upright or standing. These muscles need to be stretched on a regular basis. For example: the hamstring muscle. We’ve all had to perform hurdler types of exercises and remember how tight they feel!

Headache Drugs Can Actually Give You a Headache

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Overusing certain medications — including those used to treat headaches — can lead to “medication overuse headache” (MOH), and researchers have pinpointed the medications most at fault.

Upon reviewing the charts of 1,200 acute headache patients seen during 2005, 2000, 1995 and 1990, researchers from Princeton University found that diagnosis of MOH remained stable over the 15-year period. However, the drugs responsible for MOH changed dramatically:

  • MOH from ergotamine overuse (used to treat migraine headaches) fell from 19 percent to 0 percent
  • MOH involving triptans, a newer class of drugs, increased from 0 percent to 22 percent
  • MOH due to analgesics (painkillers) increased from 8 percent to 32 percent
  • Overuse headache from combinations of acute medications increased from 10 percent to 23 percent
  • MOH from opioid overuse decreased slightly

Many patients overuse prescription medications, and the researchers recommended implementing public health initiatives to educate doctors and patients about setting limits on prescription and other medications, and raising awareness that overusing medications for migraine headaches can lead to MOH.

Chiropractor brings DVDs to troops overseas

By LINDSAY LARIN
Bellevue Reporter Staff Writer

Imagine being cooped up for months in 120-degree weather, in cramped quarters, an entire ocean away from home. Now add the threat of war and the constant possibility of enemy attack.

Troops stationed overseas in places like Iraq and Afghanistan often are confined to limited space and unable to play some of America’s favorite pastimes like baseball and softball. With the constant threat of snipers, mines, and terrorist activity, troops are left to find alternative sources for entertainment.

In an effort to bring safe forms of entertainment to the troops, Operation DVD was founded by Rev. Scott Dryden and his associate pastor Dan Watkins after being approached by a sergeant requesting DVD’s to take to the soldiers in Baghdad. The DVD’s are sent to all branches of the military.

Operation DVD’s goal is to collect one million, new and used DVD’s donated by the American public for the troops, ultimately supplying 200 to 250 titles in rotation at each base.

Locally, Back in Action Chiropractic in Bellevue has jumped on board. The chiropractic clinic is one of the few collection points in Washington. After learning about Operation DVD from a fellow chiropractor in the Midwest, Dr. Michael Weir decided he wanted to make a difference in the lives of those serving overseas.

“It kind of struck a chord for me. I had a patient at another office who served in Iraq, and he was telling me that it gets up to 120 degrees and literally they can’t step outside. They have to come up with other ways to entertain themselves with DVD’s and such,” explained Weir, who took over Back in Action Chiropractic a year ago.

Many soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have portable DVD players and most bases have a reinforced recreation room equipped with a television and DVD player. Similar facilities exist on ships and carriers. Donated DVD’s also are sent to wounded troops who are receiving treatment in military and veteran hospitals all over the world.

Weir left his previous chiropractic job in Covington and moved to Bellevue to start his own practice. Searching for ways to get involved in the community, Weir volunteered for next year’s Relay for Life and now sits as the chairperson for team recruitment.

“Bellevue is just a great place to live and have a business and to really get plugged into the community,” Weir said. “I’m always looking for ways to give back and ways my patients can get involved and take ownership as well.”

Weir contacted Operation DVD and expressed his interest in helping with the project. A large collection box now sits just inside the door of Back in Action Chiropractic. Comedies and inspirational movies with strong moral and family values are encouraged, but Operation DVD will except any title donated. Children DVD’s collected are sent to the families back home.

“Some of these men and women who are over there fighting are my age. The fact that they’re over there is so humbling and the hardship that it must be to be away from your family and to not be able to get out and expend energy playing baseball and things. I just can’t imagine.” Weir said, adding, to have something like a feel-good movie to kind of get away for a couple of hours would be a Godsend.

New or used DVDs can be dropped off at Back in Action Chiropractic Clinic, 1940 116th Ave. N.E., Ste. 101 or send to: Operation DVD 31337 Huron Street Temecula, CA 92592, www.operationdvd.net.

You are Worth $45,000,000

Driving around Bellevue, we get to see some very nice cars! From Ferrari’s to Maserati’s. One car I have yet to see though is the Gallardo. The Gallardo is a quarter of a million dollar Lamborghini! It is an amazing piece of machinery to be certain!

Step out on a limb with me for a second, and imagine that you now own the Gallardo, a $250,000 car. How would you treat it? Would you make sure the oil was changed on a regular basis? Would you take it in to the dealer every once in awhile to make sure every thing was in working order? I asked a patient these same questions today, and his answers were similar to what I’m sure yours were-”of course I would take care of it, its worth $250,000!”

So, if this is purely a financial thing, lets take a look at your most valuable possession of all! A survey done in WIRED magazine calculated the value of the human body on the open market. They came to the conclusion that the human body is worth more than 45 million dollars!!! Makes that Gallardo look like a drop in the bucket doesn’t it?

Why then, if the human body is so valuable, do we take better care of our cars (or our imaginary Lamborghini) than we do our own bodies? Would you put “regular” gas in your Gallardo? Of course not, you would put in the “SUPER SUPREME”! So why do we continue to bad fuel in our bodies like sugar, and processed foods? Would you ever let the alignment of your Gallardo go out of balance? No way! So why are you not seeing your Chiropractor to make sure your alignment?

Start thinking of your body the way that it is, as your most valuable possession! Unlike cars, when your body starts to wear out, you can’t trade it in for a new one!
